Teen Parent Taught Driver Education

This TDLR-approved course is the perfect option for teens between the ages of 14 and 17 who want the best of both worlds--the independence of an online course and the guidance of a parent. Knock out both your "classroom" instruction and behind-the-wheel instruction requirements with this course! We offer everything you need to succeed, including a top-notch, interactive TX Driver Education course and a Behind-the-Wheel Guide to assist your parent in teaching you in-car lessons. Plus, you can take your Knowledge Test online with us, instead of at the DPS!

Please Note: You MUST have your PTDE Program Guide before starting the course. As per TDLR rules, if you begin the course without the PTDE Program Guide, none of that instruction time will count toward your requirement, and you will have to start the course over.

Are you eligible for this course?

  • You must be at least 14 years old before starting the online course.

Who is eligible to instruct this course?

There are a few requirements a person must meet in order to be eligible to instruct a Parent-Taught Driver Education course:

  • The instructor must be the student’s parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent or legal guardian appointed by a court. A power of attorney is not considered a legal guardian. Additionally, a parent, legal guardian, or a judge of a court with jurisdiction over the student can designate a person to instruct the course who:
    • is at least 25 years old;
    • does not charge a fee for conducting the course; and
    • has at least seven years of driving experience.
  • The instructor must possess a valid license for the preceding three years that has not been suspended, revoked, or forfeited in the past three years for an offense that involves the operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Instructors cannot have:
    • a conviction (including a probated sentence) of criminally negligent homicide; or
    • a conviction (including a probated sentence) of driving while intoxicated in the last seven years; and
    • a conviction in the preceding three years of:
      1. three or more moving violations described by Section 542.304, Transportation Code, including violations that resulted in an accident; or
      2. two or more moving violations described by Section 542.304, Transportation Code, that resulted in an accident.

Instructors are responsible for checking their criminal and driver records prior to requesting the PTDE Program Guide. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will verify the instructor’s record when it processes the student’s learner license and again when it processes the student’s provisional driver license.

If the DPS determines that the instructor does not meet the requirements, the DPS will deny the learner license or provisional driver license along with any prior classroom instruction or behind the wheel/in-car instruction provided by the ineligible instructor.

To verify your eligibility to be an instructor before ordering the PTDE Program Guide, please use the DPS Online Driver Record Request System.

Teen (AMI) Driver Education

Texas Teen Driver Education is ideal if you are between the ages of 14 and 17 and want to take your course on your own, with no parental guidance. Teens who opt for this course will complete their driver education requirement online and then transfer their course hours to either a commercial driver education school or to their parent in order to begin behind-the-wheel training. The course is 32 hours in length and allows students to take their Knowledge Test online, instead of at a DPS office!

Are you eligible for this course?

  • You must be at least 14 years old before you start the Texas Teen Driver's Ed course.

Behind-the-Wheel ONLY

This course allows you to satisfy the 14-hour behind-the-wheel training requirement (7 hours of in-car observation and 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction) with your parent as your instructor. It includes videos, animations, and practical behind-the-wheel exercises that will prepare you to get out on the road on your own. The Behind-the-Wheel ONLY course is ideal for students who have started or completed Texas Teen (AMI) Driver Education.

Are you eligible for this course?

  • You must have completed at least the first six hours of the "classroom" or theory portion of a driver education course. If you have not yet started the classroom portion of driver education, you can take our online Texas Teen Driver Education course to meet this requirement.

Fun Fact Only in Texas

A stretch of road in Texas has the highest speed limit in the entire country! Part of Texas State Highway 130 (a toll road) allows drivers to cruise up to 85 MPH--legally.

Fun Fact Famous Roads

Famous Route 66 runs through multiple states, including Texas. Despite the Lone Star State's large size, only 186 miles of Route 66 are spent in Texas (compared to much larger stretches, like the 487 miles that go through New Mexico).

Fun Fact Scenic Spots

If you're driving along Route 66, west of Amarillo, keep your eyes peeled for Cadillac Ranch. It's not hard to miss--the art installation features 10 Cadillacs half-buried in the sand. The cars, which were originally placed there by a group of artists known as Ant Farm, have been colorfully graffitied over the years and are one of the most popular parts of Route 66.
