How to Dismiss a Traffic Ticket

You can get your traffic ticket dismissed and avoid having points added to your driver record by completing an approved Texas defensive driving course.

Each court specifies its own eligibility requirements for taking a defensive driving course for ticket dismissal, so you must check with your court to ensure you qualify. In general, you're usually eligible to take a defensive driving course if you meet the following requirements:

  • You have a valid driver license (that is not a Commercial Driver License).
  • You were ticketed for a moving violation such as speeding or running a red light.
  • You have not taken Texas traffic school for a ticket you received in the last 12 months.

You must request to take a defensive driving course for the traffic violation shown on your citation and pay a fee to the court for permission to take the course. If you are granted permission to take a defensive driving course to dismiss your traffic violation, you will be required by your court to obtain a copy of your Texas driving record. You can save time and have Safe2Drive order your driver record for you.

When you complete Safe2Drive's Texas defensive driving course, you will take your Certificate of Completion to your court to prove that you have taken the course, and your ticket will be dismissed.

Please Note: If you are a non-Texas resident, you must download the student affidavit.

How to Get an Insurance Discount

Many insurance companies offer auto discounts to drivers who complete a defensive driving program. Check with your insurance provider to see if they offer this discount. Discounts can be as high as 15%.

If your insurance provider does offer this discount, select the "Insurance Discount" option when you register for the Texas defensive driving course. When you complete the course, print a copy of your Certificate of Completion and deliver it to your insurance company. They'll reduce your car insurance premium.
