What is the 12-hour Virginia RADEP Course?

RADEP (which stands for Reckless Aggressive Driver Education Program) is a 12-hour program that drivers may be ordered by a court to take if they are charged with a non-alcohol-related reckless or aggressive driving offense.

The first 8 hours of the course cover the same material as our Virginia Driver Improvement course. During this portion of the course, we cover traffic laws and techniques for safe driving. The last 4 hours of the course are dedicated to driver psychology and behaviors, including how to safely handle anger and stress when you're behind the wheel.

Course topics include the following:

  • Defensive driving techniques
  • How to safely avoid and manage distractions behind-the-wheel
  • How to interact with other roadway users
  • Right-of-way rules
  • How to drive in adverse conditions
  • Aggressive driving behaviors – what they are, what causes them, their risk factors and legal consequences
  • Road rage – what it is, what causes it, risk factors and legal consequences
  • Driver psychology – understanding why we make risky choices and how to form healthy driving habits
  • Strategies for safely handling anger, stress, and other difficult emotions on the road, including anger management techniques and conflict resolution
  • Understanding that driving is a conscious choice you make in the moment, not just a habit.

Please Note:You should check with your court prior to registering to ensure they accept online courses to satisfy the RADEP requirement. Most courts do accept online courses, but there are a few courts who may require you to take an in-person course.

Can I receive DMV credit or safe driving points for completing RADEP?

No. RADEP courses are not for DMV credit or safe driving points. The purpose of RADEP is solely to satisfy a court requirement for a Reckless Aggressive Driver Education Program (RADEP).

If you're looking for DMV credit or safe driving points, please check out our VA DMV-approved 8-hour Driver Improvement course.

What is the difference between the 12-hour full RADEP course and the 4-hour supplemental RADEP course? How do I know which one to take?

RADEP can be completed EITHER as a single 12-hour course or as two separate courses completed sequentially: the 8-hour Driver Improvement course and the 4-hour Reckless Aggressive Driver Education course.

If the court has ordered you to take complete RADEP, we recommend you take the single 12-hour course UNLESS you have already recently completed an 8-hour Driver Improvement course and the judge has told you that you can count that toward your RADEP requirement. In those circumstances, you can take the 4-hour supplemental Reckless Aggressive Driver Education Program course to meet the RADEP requirement. But, make sure you have permission from your court to do this. Just because you've taken an 8-hour Driver Improvement course in the past doesn't mean your judge will allow that to count toward a RADEP requirement.
