The DETS course is a 6-hour course that teens under the age of 18 must take to get their Learner's License. Students must be at least 14 years old to take the course.

Who Should Take This Course

Teens under 18 who want to qualify for a Florida Learner’s License should take the DETS course. You can start the course at age 14 but you must be at least 15 to get your Learner’s License. Our course is authorized by the Florida HSMV."

How does the DETS course work?

You can complete the course in four easy steps.

1. Register. If you are at least 14 years old and under 18, you can sign up for our DETS course to qualify for your Learner's License. Registration is quick and easy--simply create a username and password and read some information about the course. Make payment and then you're ready to get started.

Note: If you are age 18 or older and looking to qualify for your first Driver's License, you can take our 4-hour TLSAE course.

2. Complete the 6 hours of online coursework. Enjoy short lessons full of games, animations, videos and other interactive multimedia elements. Each lesson is followed by a short quiz. You must pass the lesson quiz to move on to the next lesson. Most people pass the lesson quiz on their first attempt, but we provide unlimited retakes of lesson quizzes at no additional cost. Review the lesson material and retake the quizzes until you pass!

3. Pass the final exam. At the end of the course, you must pass a 40-question, multiple-choice final exam. A passing score is 80%. We are sure you will do great on your first try, but don’t worry, if you don’t pass the final exam, you will have the opportunity to review the course and try again until you do pass.

4. Receive your Receipt of Completion. When you pass the final exam, we will electronically submit your completion to the FL HSMV. We will also email you your Receipt of Completion, which you can keep for your records.


How do you get your Learner's License if you are under 18?

If you are under age 18, you must meet the following requirements to get their Learner’s License:

  • You must be at least 15 years old.
  • You must have a signed/notarized Parental Consent Form (step-parents may not sign unless they have legally adopted the minor child).
  • You must have proof that you have completed a FL DETS course.
  • You must pass a vision and hearing test (testing is conducted in a service center).
  • You must pass a Class E Knowledge Exam (also known as the permit test).

Driving Restrictions

Drivers with a Learner’s License have the following driving restrictions:

  • You may only drive during daylight hours for the first 3 months after your Learner's License is issued. After 3 months, you can drive until 10 P.M.
  • You must ALWAYS be accompanied by a licensed driver who is age 21+.
  • You must complete 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 hour of which must be at night.

You must hold your Learner’s License for a minimum of 12 months or until your 18th birthday, whichever comes first, before applying for your Driver’s License.

What happens if I do not pass the lesson quiz?

Most people pass the lesson quiz the first time. However, if you fail a lesson quiz, you may review the lesson material and retake the quiz as many times as necessary until you pass at no additional charge.


Is there a final exam?

Yes. The final exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, and you must score at least 80% to pass. We are sure you will do great on your first try, but don’t worry, if you don’t pass the final exam, you will have the opportunity to review the course and try again until you do pass.


How long does the course take to complete?

The online program consists of 6 hours of coursework. Each lesson is timed to ensure you spend the required time in the course. You may complete the course at your own pace. Each time you log back in, we take you right back to where you last left off.


How long do I have to finish the course?

You may complete the course at your own pace. We do not require you to complete the course in a certain length of time.


How do I get my Receipt of Completion?

The Receipt of Completion is awarded after you have completed the course and passed the final exam. We will email the Receipt of Completion to you.

We electronically process your completion to the FL HSMV for you as soon as you complete the course.


How much does the course cost and what are my payment options?

The price of the Florida DETS course is $26.95 plus a $3 processing fee. You may pay by one of the following methods:
