What is the Florida DETS and Permit Test bundle?

The bundle allows you to take both the DETS course and Permit Test online for a discounted price (you save $6.95). You must complete both the DETS course and the Permit Test to qualify for a Learner's License in Florida.

What is the DETS course?

DETS is a 6-hour course that covers information on traffic laws, road signs, the mechanics of driving (such as turning, passing, and parking), and defensive driving techniques (such as how to use a safe following distance). You are required to complete a DETS course to qualify for your Learner's License. You can take the DETS course as long as you are at least 14 years of age and under age 18. Please note that while you can take the DETS course at age 14, you must be at least 15 years old to get your Learner's License.

What is the Florida Permit Test?

The Florida Permit Test (also known as the Class E Knowledge Exam) is an exam on road signs and traffic laws that you must pass to qualify for your Learner's License or a Class E Driver License in Florida. If you are at least 14 years and 6 months old and under the age of 18, you can skip the hassle of taking the Permit Test at the Florida driver license agency and take the Permit Test online. Complete the Permit Test wherever you have internet access--from the comfort of your home, favorite coffee shop, or wherever is most convenient for you.

How does the bundle work?

You can complete your DETS course and Permit Test bundle in 3 easy steps!

Step One: Register

Registration is quick and easy! You'll create an account with your username and password and fill out your contact information. You'll also need to supply a unique identifier, which can be the last five digits of your Social Security Number, your alien registration number, your admissions number, or your Florida ID card.

During registration, you'll also answer personal validation questions, which you'll be asked to recall your answers for during the DETS course. Here's an example of a personal validation question: "Which of these colors do you like most?"

You must be at least 14 years and 6 months old and under the age of 18 to take the Permit Test online. If you are under 14 years and 6 months old or if you are age 18 or older, you cannot purchase the bundle option.

Step Two: Complete the DETS Course and Permit Test

You can complete the DETS course and Permit Test in whichever order you prefer.

Florida DETS Course

The DETS course is 6-hours long and is made up of short lessons full of games, animations, videos and other interactive multimedia elements. Each lesson is followed by a short quiz. You must pass the lesson quiz to move on to the next lesson. Most people pass the lesson quiz on their first attempt, but we provide unlimited retakes of lesson quizzes at no additional cost. Review the lesson material and retake the quizzes until you pass!

At the end of the course, you must pass a 40-question, multiple-choice final exam. A passing score is 80%. We are sure you will do great on your first try, but don’t worry, if you don’t pass the final exam, you will have the opportunity to review the course and try again until you do pass.

Florida Permit Test

Prior to starting the Permit Test, you will be asked to verify your name and date of birth.

The Permit Test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions on road signs and traffic laws. You must answer 40 questions correctly to pass. Each question is immediately graded as soon as you confirm your answer selection, so you will know right away if you got a question correct or incorrect. Once you answer 40 questions correctly, you have passed the exam and the exam will end. You have 60 minutes to complete the exam.

The Florida driver license agency requires that you remain active in the Permit Test while you’re taking it and that you don’t navigate away from the test to outside webpages. If you navigate away from the test window, your exam will automatically count as a failed attempt. You must answer each exam question within 3 minutes or the exam will be terminated and counted as a failed attempt.

Your parent or guardian must supervise you as you take the Permit Test. Before you can begin the exam, your parent or guardian must provide their Driver License number and acknowledge that they are proctoring the exam.

Step Three: Your DETS Course and Permit Test Completions Will Automatically Be Submitted to the Florida Driver License Agency for You

Your DETS course and Permit Test completions will automatically be submitted to the Florida driver license agency for you. These completions are separate and will be submitted at the time each item is completed (i.e., we submit your DETS completion when you complete the course and your Permit Test completion will be submitted as soon as you pass the Permit Test). We also provide you with a FREE copy of your Receipt of Completion for the DETS course and the Permit Test that you can keep for your records.

Random Re-examination

Students who take the Permit Test online may be randomly selected for re-examination at the driver license office prior to issuance of your license. You must pass the re-examination to get your license.

Am I eligible to sign up for the bundle?

You must be at least 14 years and 6 months old and under 18 years old to sign up for the bundle. Also, you are only allowed three attempts to pass the Permit Test online. Keep in mind that you must pay for each exam attempt. If you've already attempted the Permit Test online three times, you are not eligible to sign up for the bundle.

What language options are there for the Permit Test?

The Permit Test is available in 9 languages: English, Spanish, French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Russian, and Chinese. When you start the permit test, you will be able to select your preferred language for the test.

What happens if I fail the Permit Test?

You are permitted three attempts to pass the Permit Test online. If you fail the Permit Test and you have not exceeded the three attempts, you may make payment and take the exam again. There is no required wait period between exam attempts. You should study the Florida Driver License Handbook to help you prepare for the test. You can view the Florida Driver License Handbook here. If you fail the third attempt, you must take the Permit Test at the Florida driver license agency.

Please note that you must pay for each online exam attempt. Unfortunately, the Florida driver license agency charges us for every online exam attempt, which is why you must pay each time you take the exam. Don’t worry! Is there a time limit for the Florida Permit Test?

Yes, there is a 60-minute time limit for the Permit Test. After 60 minutes, any unanswered questions will automatically be marked as "incorrect" and you will fail the exam.

What is an "Inactivity Alert"?

What are personal validation questions?

The State of Florida requires that you answer personal validation questions (also known as "personal security questions") when you take the DETS course. These questions are meant to verify that the person registering for the course is the same person who is completing the course. An example of a personal validation question is "What is your favorite color?" You will fill out the answers to these validation questions during registration.

During the DETS course, you will be asked one validation question after each of the first five lessons. You must answer the question correctly to proceed with the course. You have 10 minutes and 3 attempts to answer the question correctly. If you do not answer the question correctly within that 10-minute time frame and within the 3 attempts, the State of Florida requires that we lock you out of the course. You must contact Customer Support so they can verify your identity and unlock the course for you.

How do I get my Certificate of Completion?

Your completion information will automatically be submitted to the Florida driver license agency for you for both the DETS course and the Permit Test (please note that these are separate completions). We also provide you with a Receipt of Completion that you can keep for your records.

How much does the DETS course and Permit Test bundle cost?

The DETS course and Permit Test bundle costs $44.95 plus a $3 state processing fee. The Florida driver license agency charges Safe2Drive to electronically process your course completion to them and for them to annotate it on your record.

How do I get my Florida Learner's License?

To qualify for your Florida Learner's License you must:

1. Be at least 15 years old.
2. Complete the Driver Education and Traffic Safety (DETS) course.
3. Pass the Permit Test (also known as the Class E Knowledge exam).
4. Pass a vision test.

If you are under age 18 and you are not married, you must have your parent or legal guardian sign your license application in front of the driver license examiner/agent or a notary public. The parent or legal guardian who signs your application agrees to take responsibility for your driving. If the signer decides to rescind responsibility, your license will be canceled. Married minors must show a certified marriage certificate. Emancipated minors must show a certified court order.

If you meet the above requirements, fill out a driver license application and visit the Florida driver license agency with your parent if you are under 18 to apply for your Learner's License.

Driving Restrictions: If you are between the ages of 15 and 17 and have a Learner's License, you must adhere to the following driving restrictions:

• You must always drive accompanied by a licensed driver who is age 21 or older in the closest seat to the right of the driver.
• You must only drive during daylight hours during the first 3 months after earning your Learner's License. After 3 months, you may drive until 10 P.M.

How do I get my Florida Class E Driver License?

To qualify for your Florida Class E Driver License, you must do the following:

1. Be at least 16 years old.
2. Complete the Driver Education and Traffic Safety (DETS) course.
3. You must provide the required identification documents (to find more information regarding the required identification documents, click here).
4. You must pass the Permit Test (also known as the Class E Knowledge exam).
5. You must pass a vision test.
6. You must pass the Driving Skills exam.
7. If you are under age 18, you must also:
• Hold your Learner's License for 12 months or until your 18th birthday, whichever comes first.
• Have NO moving traffic violation convictions for 12 months from the date your Leaner's License was issued. Or, you may have ONE moving traffic violation (within 12 months of the date your Learner's License was issued) if adjudication is withheld.
• Have a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult 21 years old or older certify that you have had at least 50 hours of driving experience, 10 hours of which must be at night.
• Have a parent or guardian sign the parental consent form.
• Be in compliance with school attendance.

Driving Restrictions: If you are under age 18 and have your Class E Driver License, you face certain driving restrictions depending on your age.

• If you are age 16, you must not drive between 11 P.M. to 6 A.M.
• If you are age 17, you must not drive between 1 A.M. to 5 A.M. unless you are driving to or from work OR you are accompanied by a licensed driver who is age 21 or older.
• Any driver under age 18 who accumulates 6 or more points within a 12-month period is automatically restricted for one year to driving for "Business Purposes ONLY."
