What is the Alaska Defensive Driving course?

The Alaska Defensive Driving course is an online course on defensive driving techniques and traffic laws that you can take to reduce points on your driving record or satisfy a court referral.

If you’d like to reduce points on your driving record or if you were referred by a court to take a Defensive Driving course, you’ve come to the right place.

Point Reduction Defensive Driving Course

Choose the Point Reduction course option if you are taking this course to receive a two-point reduction on your driving record. Keep in mind that you must complete the course within 12 months of the date of your last violation to receive the credit and no more than one course may be used to obtain a point reduction in any 12-month period.

Step 1: Register for the course.

Step 2: Complete the Course

Our course consists of ten short lessons, which are packed with engaging instruction, animations, slide shows, videos and games. There’s a short multiple choice quiz after each lesson. Don’t worry—you can take the quiz as many times as necessary to pass.

The course is completely online and works on every mobile device. Complete the course wherever it’s most convenient for you—at home or on the go!

You can come and go as often as you like—each time you log in, we take you to where you last left off. You can complete the course at whatever pace best suits you.

Step 3: Pass the final exam.

The State of Alaska requires all defensive driving students to take the final exam at an approved testing location. We offer an extensive list of convenient testing locations from which to choose from. You must score 80% or higher to pass. You may take the exam as many times as necessary to pass.

Step 4: Receive your Certificate of Completion.

You can print a free copy of your Certificate of Completion for your records. We submit your completion information to the DMV for you.

Court-Referred Defensive Driving Course

Choose our Court-Referred course option if you received a ticket and were referred by a court to take a Defensive Driving course. You may take a Defensive Driving course to satisfy a court referral as often as necessary.

Is this course approved?

Yes, our course is approved by the Alaska DMV.

Why should I take a Defensive Driving course?

The most common reason drivers take a Defensive Driving course is to get a two-point reduction on their driving record. You may also take a Defensive Driving course if you received a traffic ticket and were referred by a court to take a Defensive Driving course. Please be sure to choose the Court-Referred option when registering if you were referred by a court to take a Defensive Driving course.

Am I eligible to take a Defensive Driving course?

Point Reduction: You are eligible to take our Point Reduction course option if you have not taken a Defensive Driving course for a point reduction in the past 12 months. You must complete the course within 12 months of the date of your last violation to receive a two-point reduction on your driving record.

Court-Referred: You are eligible to take our Court-Referred course option if you have been referred by a court to take a Defensive Driving course. You may take a Defensive Driving course to satisfy a court referral as often as necessary.

How long is this course?

Our Alaska Defensive Driving course is 8 hours in length, as mandated by the state. You may work through the course at your own pace—complete the whole course in one day or spread it out over a longer period. It’s completely up to you.

What information is covered in this course?

In our Alaska Defensive Driving course, you’ll learn all about Alaska’s traffic laws as well as defensive driving techniques to keep you safe on the road. Our course is specifically tailored to Alaskan drivers. You’ll learn how Alaska’s climate, geography and unique landscape present specific challenges to drivers, and how to handle them.

What is the course like?

Do I need to pass a final exam?

Yes, at the end of the course, you are required to pass a multiple-choice exam comprised of 10 questions. You must score at least 80% to pass. The State of Alaska requires you to take the final exam at an approved testing center. We offer an extensive list of testing centers for you to choose from. You can choose your testing center during registration or right before you take the final exam.

How do I get my Certificate of Completion?

If you’re taking the Point Reduction course, we will submit your completion information to the DMV for you. You can also print a free copy of your Certificate of Completion for your records.

If you’re taking the Court-Referred course, you can print your Certificate of Completion online. You must sign your certificate and deliver it to your court.
