The Future of Road Skills Tests in Georgia

by Courtney Conley

The future of driving tests is here in Georgia. Anyone who wants to get their driver’s license in Georgia must pass the road test. Traditionally, road tests were supervised by an examiner who rode in the vehicle with the driver during the test. Thanks to cool new technology, this is no longer the case.

The Georgia Department of Driver Services is now using Virtual Road Test (VRT) technology to complete the road test for anyone applying for a non-commercial driver’s license or permit. The applicant will need to be accompanied by a parent, responsible adult, or licensed driving instructor who is at least age 21. The supervising passenger isn’t allowed to speak or otherwise communicate with the driver during the test, or the driver will automatically fail.

Instead of riding with the applicant, the examiner administers the road test virtually through a dual-facing camera and alert system that allows them to monitor what’s going on inside and outside of the vehicle during the test. VRT technology also allows the examiner to communicate and guide the driver through hands-free communication.

This change has gotten positive reviews so far, and the DDS is excited about this new way of administering road tests. Let us help you prepare for earning your license!
