Saturday Hours and Services at the DMV

by Courtney Conley

Saturdays at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) can be a bit hectic. Because the DMV's weekday hours usually coincide with customers' workdays, there are typically a lot of people trying to use DMV services on the weekend. Depending on the DMV field office you visit, services may be limited.

Many DMV field offices are open on Saturday. Each state has its own department, so the hours and services will vary depending on your state. In California, for example, around 60 field offices are open on Saturdays, and all services are provided except behind-the-wheel tests. These field offices in California are open from 8 am to 5 pm on Saturdays in an attempt to ease waiting times.

In Texas, many driver license offices across the state are open by appointment from 8 am to 5 pm on Saturdays for customers who need to renew or replace their Texas driver license or ID cards only. In New York City, several field offices are open for appointments on Saturdays. SOS offices in Illinois are open on Saturdays from 7:30 am to 12 pm.

Whenever you can, make sure to schedule your DMV appointment in advance. This will help save what could be hours of wait time. You can usually make an appointment by calling the office, or visiting their website. Many locations let you make appointments as many as 90 days in advance, which is very helpful.

In general, Saturday services at the DMV are a bit limited due to the vast number of customers. Most of the time, you will be able to renew or replace your driver license or ID card, report a change of address or name, and renew your vehicle's registration. You may be able to take a written driving exam on Saturdays as well, but many offices do not offer road tests on Saturdays.

Many services are also available online at your state's DMV website. Typically, you'll be able to renew your driver license and vehicle registration, register an address change, order customized license plates, and request your driving record online.
