Are you a new graduate? Congratulations! Now that you have your well-earned diploma in hand and your future ahead, there’s one thing we need to talk about before leaving school behind you: safe driving practices!
Why Getting Your Driver’s License Matters
Before we jump in to the safe driving practices we promised, we should talk about why actually having a license is useful. We know that rideshare services like Uber and Lyft have become super convenient, making it easy to get around without owning a car or having a driver’s license. But as you embark on this exciting new chapter of your life, it’s worth considering the benefits of obtaining your driver’s license:
- Expanded Opportunities: Rideshare services can get pretty pricey, especially if you’re traveling long distances. Having your license means you’ll have the freedom to explore new places, take on job opportunities that require a license, and be ready for any adventure that comes your way.
- Life Skills: Learning to drive and earning your license is a great way to build your self-confidence, decision-making skills, and your ability to adapt to changing conditions. These are all important skills you’ll need in other aspects of your life now that you’ve graduated.
- Financial Savings: This one depends a lot on where you’re living and what your daily life looks like. There are some situations where it’ll definitely be cheaper to use public transportation or rideshare services rather than using your own car, but there’s also many instances where it’s much more cost-effective to own your own vehicle, especially if you opt for a hybrid or electric vehicle.
- Just in Case: When it comes down to it, knowing how to drive is a useful skill that can come in handy when you might not expect it. Even if you don’t plan to drive often, it doesn’t hurt to learn just in case you need it!
Now that we’ve discussed why you should get a license, let’s look at some ways to use it responsibly.
Safe Driving Practices for New Grads (And Everyone Else)
First things first: get acquainted with your vehicle. Learn the ins and outs of its features, and make sure you’re comfortable with all of the options it offers. Familiarize yourself with essential maintenance tasks like checking tire pressure and oil levels.
Next up: don’t drive distracted! Get your music/podcast/directions ready before you leave the driveway. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb mode. Remind your passengers that you’re trying to focus on the road, and keep the yappin’ at a minimum.
Wear your seatbelt! For real, just do it. There’s literally no reason not to wear a seatbelt and frankly it’s embarrassing when you get in a car with someone who refuses to buckle up. Be cool and be safe.
Finally, have fun! Whether you’re heading into the workforce or off to college, you’ve earned the right to celebrate. Plan a fun road trip with your friends. Or just treat yourself to some drive-thru ice cream on your way home. Whatever you do, do it safely.
We hope this has helped show you that getting your license is more than just a milestone to check off a list--it unlocks new opportunities, helps you grow as a person, and is just really convenient! So enjoy the freedom of the open road, but keep it safe, too! Get to know your car, ditch the distractions, and always buckle up. As a new grad, you’ve got a bright future to look forward to!
