How to Check Points on Your Driver License

What is a driver record?

Your driver record is used by the court system to keep track of your traffic violations. Most states use a points system to impose penalties on those who commit multiple traffic offenses in a certain span of time. Earning too many points on your driver record can result in an increase in your car insurance rate, more fines and penalties, and even suspension or revocation of your driving privilege.

The number of points you get on your driver license will depend on the traffic violation and where you committed the violation. For example, take a look at the chart below for an overview of Indiana's point system:

How do you check your driver license points?

You should be able to check your driver record online to see how many points you have accrued. Visit your state's Department of Motor Vehicles website to see if they offer online driver records. Make sure you're visiting your state's official website and not a third-party website.

You can also visit your local DMV office to obtain a copy of your driving record. Be sure to contact them ahead of time so you're aware of any fees you may be charged for a copy of your driver record.
