How Idaho Law Works
Idaho assigns points to your driving record every time you are convicted of a traffic violation. The number of points depends on the severity of the violation. For example, three points are assigned to your record if you fail to stop at a stop sign. Four points are assigned if you pass a school bus.
The Idaho Transportation Department tracks these violations and points. The Driver Services Section administers the tracking. They also receive notices from other states and Canada of traffic violations. This means that a ticket you get in Montana will end up in your record in Idaho.
Points stay on your record for three years after the conviction date.
Removing Points
You can remove 3 points from your record by attending a defensive driving class. You may take a defensive driving course once every three years. The time period begins on the date you finish the course. Note your ticket is not erased when you take defensive driving course. You reduce by three the points on your record. Also you cannot reserve a 3-point credit for future use.
