Mature driver improvement courses are designed for drivers 55 and older and provide instruction on:
Drivers who complete a mature driver improvement course qualify for reduced insurance premiums. California law allows insurance companies to determine the percentage of premium reduction. The insurance carrier can refuse to give a reduced rate to those who have poor driving records. You may wish to ask your insurance company about your eligibility and the amount of discount prior to taking an approved mature driver improvement course.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) regulates the program. Schools that offer the course must be approved by the DMV. Safe2Drive is an approved provider.
There are two courses from which to choose. The basic or initial course is 6 hours long and must be taken if you have not taken a mature driver improvement course in the last three years. The refresher or renewal course is 4 hours long and can be taken if you've taken a mature driver improvement course in the last three years.
The course can be taken in a classroom or online. Classroom time must be 400 minutes (6 hours and 40 minutes) for the initial course and 240 minutes (4 hours) for the renewal course. The online course is self-paced and can be taken anywhere you have internet access. This means you can take it in the convenience of your home. Logins are usually unlimited.
You are given a certificate of completion once you finish the course. This certificate is submitted to your insurance company for a discount. The discount is usually good for three years. You can maintain the discount by taking a renewal course.
