Defensive Driving in Texas
You typically take a defensive driving (a.k.a., driver safety) course after you have been issued a citation. Your ticket will be dismissed upon successful completion.
Each court specifies its eligibility requirements for defensive driving;
therefore you must check with your court. In general you are eligible for defensive driving if:

You have a valid driver licence. |

You were ticketed for a moving violation (e.g., speeding, red light). |
|
You have not taken traffic school for a ticket you got in the last 12 months. |
You must request defensive driving for the violation shown on your citation. You will also pay a fee to the court for permission to take defensive driving.
Note this fee is separate from the fee you pay the defensive driving school.
If the court grants you permission to take a driver safety course, you will be required to obtain a copy of your driving record from the Texas Department of
Public Safety (DPS). You may make this request by clicking here.
Citation
Your citation is the ticket the officer gave you. Each county in Texas has its own form of citation. You must read the citation carefully to
understand your options and if defensive driving is one of them. In most cases you must resolve your citation within 15 days of getting it.
Charge Dismissed
Upon completing defensive driving Safe2Drive sends you a certificate of completion. This is your proof that you completed a defensive driving program. You sign the
certificate and submit it to the court. At this point your citation will be dismissed.

Exam
You must pass an exam to earn yoru proof of completion (certificate). The exam is easy and takes about 10 minutes. You take it right on your computer.
Certificate
We mail you an original copy of your certificate. You sign this and take it to the court. This is your proof that you completed a defensive driving program.
